Prep Class

Prep students have settled well into life at St Finbarr’s.  They have begun their school journey with enthusiasm, determination, and perseverance.

This year, we introduced a new phonics program called UFLI which encourages students to practice segmenting, blending, and writing as they learn new letters each week.  Using this excellent resource and knowledge of Finnie’s words, students have also started reading and writing simple words and sentences.  In English, students are learning how to identify, produce and replicate rhymes using nursery rhymes as well as high quality authentic texts.  We had lots of fun listening to two versions of the song ‘Down by the Bay’, creating our own rhymes and deciding which version we liked the best.

In math, students are learning everything about numbers! Each week, they practice identifying, writing, counting, subitizing, adding, ordering and comparing their number of the week. They have also enjoyed using playdough to form letters, painting and drawing addition problems, and replicating shape patterns.

Each Friday, students create a piece of art for their letter focus.  Come and see our amazing apples, pink pigs, sparkly snakes, mini monsters, tiny turtles, friendly fish, interesting iguanas and new necklaces!

St Finbarr's Student Protection Contacts

It is a legislative requirement that all non-state schools have at least two nominated staff members to whom a student can report the behaviour of another staff member that the student considers inappropriate.  We call these specially trained staff members School Student Protection Contacts, or SSPCs.  Each SSPC has been nominated by the principal in recognition of their integrity, approachability and knowledge in the area of student protection.  Whilst students are encouraged to speak up to any trusted adult in the school community, it is important that they know they can access these specific staff members at any time should they have worries, queries or concerns. You will have noticed posters throughout the school depicting our current SSPCs.  The SSPCs are also published on our school website along with information about our student protection processes.  In everything we do at St Finbarr's student safety is our highest priority, therefore the SSPCs at our school are key personnel in our overall safeguarding processes.  Please see the poster depicting our current SSPC team.
