Principals Report

Dear Parents and friends.

I am sure there are a lot of tired children around as we start our school holidays. I have heard there are lots of exciting holidays planned.

Arts Fest Camp

We were very fortunate to be able to head to Toowoomba to be involved in the inaugural TCSO Arts Fest. The students were involved in several workshops. On Tuesdays the students participated in a 2-hour drama workshop followed by a singing workshop, and a drama performance on Tuesday night. They performed their recital of the poem My Country on Tuesday night as well. On Wednesday the students participated in the final dress and stage rehearsal and performed in the theatre performance of The Little Mermaid on the Empire Theatre stage on Wednesday night. We also visited the Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery, Cobb & Co Museum, Back stage & history tour of the Empire Theatre and the students were also treated to a movie at the cinemas. It was a fantastic arts camp, and we are looking forward to the next one!

Report Cards

Report cards were sent home with your child yesterday. If your child wasn’t at school, they have been sent in the mail so please keep an eye out. I have read them all and I am very pleased with the overall general comments of all the children. Please pass on to your children my congratulations.

State Carnival

Digby was selected to represent Southwest Queensland in the 11–12-year-old Rugby League team. Digby and his family have travelled to Gladstone, and he had his first game yesterday and will be participating in several more games over the next few days. We are all very excited to hear how the carnival goes and we wish him all the best and good luck. St Finbarr’s is very proud of your efforts!

Pupil Free Day

Just a reminder that there is a Pupil Free Day on Monday 10^th July. Students will begin school on Tuesday the 11^{th of} July.

Quilpie & District Athletics Carnival

Quilpie State College will be hosting the Quilpie & District athletics carnival on Friday the 21^st July on their oval. Students are allowed to wear their house colours or school uniform.

I hope you all have an enjoyable holiday with your children home. I look forward to seeing everyone around over the holidays and when school returns.

TCSO Catholic Education week will be celebrated during week 3 in Term 3 from Monday 24^th July – July 28^th

3-6 Classroom News

The end of Semester One seems to have suddenly arrived. Time is flying. 

Our English unit has wrapped up with stories and arguments aplenty. The children have fine-tuned their stories, published them to Book Creator, presented them to the P-2 class and some have been included in the school’s newsletter. Additionally, the children are fully equipped with a wealth of emotive and mature language and are all now expert negotiators and persuaders. Hopefully, you are reaping the benefits of this at home. 

Our math unit has culminated in a review of the Semester’s work which will assist with developing our learning sequences for the next semester. The students have been working on their understanding of number and place value, with the younger students focusing on whole numbers and the older students working with whole and decimal numbers.  

Our science unit, ‘A Material World’ has wrapped up with the students exploring how natural and processed materials have a range of physical properties that can influence their use. Students engaged in several experiments and developed designs for clothing to suit a range of environments and working conditions.   

Within our HASS unit, students reflected on their understanding of the changes, both positive and negative, that have occurred in Australia since the arrival of European settlers. Students researched and presented their knowledge to the class on a range of topics; the Heroes of Gundagai, the diversity of Australian wildlife, the overland telegraph and David Unaipon to name but a few of the topics covered.  

Wishing everyone a safe mid-year break and we look forward to seeing everyone back for Round 3.

A Fractured Fairy Tale

The Three Little Turtles

Once upon a time, in a faraway ocean there were three little turtles who were sent by their parents to build their own homes. The first little turtle built his house out of sand. The second little turtle was not any better and he built his house out of seaweed. The third turtle, who was the smartest and most hard working, built his house out of coral. 

One-night, Bad Barramundi came to the first little turtle’s house. It was very easy for Bad Barramundi to tear down the poor little turtle’s house. All it took was a swish of his powerful, bulldozer like fin for the poor little turtle’s home to vanish. Then Bad Barramundi saw a turtle shell and in the blink of an eye the little turtle was eaten, but Bad Barramundi was not satisfied.

 He then went to the second turtle’s house and Bad Barramundi thought to himself this will be a breeze. With another flick of his powerful, bulldozer like fin the second little turtle’s house was demolished and revealed the anxious little turtle, but this time the turtle darted to his brother’s house. 

 Bad Barramundi took off after the little turtle. Bad Barramundi arrived at the coral house and with his powerful, bulldozer like fin he hit the coral house.

 CRACK! 

“OUCH!” wailed Bad Barramundi. When he looked down at his fin, he saw that he had broken his fin on the strong titanium like house. With another wail of pain Bad Barramundi vanished never to be seen again.

The turtles learnt to always build their houses out of coral.

Gotcha tickets are given out each week when students are seen to be following our school rules and values.  Actions may include caring for each other, greeting other students, staff and parents warmly or showing respect and responsibility.  Actions may also be following the words of Mary Mackillop -  'Never see a need without doing something about it.'

Instrumental performance

Our 4-6 students are offered the opportunity to be apart of the instrumental music program.  Students have been doing online lessons each week this term, but last week, their wonderful teacher Mrs Leia Jensen visited them in person! They had a fantastic day of lessons and finished off the visit with a performance with their Quilpie State College peers to showcase their skills and perform for their families, followed by dinner with their music teacher at The Brick! What a great night and sure to be the beginning of more instrumental music evenings!

St Finbarr's Student Protection Contacts

It is a legislative requirement that all non-state schools have at least two nominated staff members to whom a student can report the behaviour of another staff member that the student considers inappropriate.  We call these specially trained staff members School Student Protection Contacts, or SSPCs.  Each SSPC has been nominated by the principal in recognition of their integrity, approachability and knowledge in the area of student protection.  Whilst students are encouraged to speak up to any trusted adult in the school community, it is important that they know they can access these specific staff members at any time should they have worries, queries or concerns. You will have noticed posters throughout the school depicting our current SSPCs.  The SSPCs are also published on our school website along with information about our student protection processes.  In everything we do at St Finbarr's student safety is our highest priority, therefore the SSPCs at our school are key personnel in our overall safeguarding processes.  Please see the poster depicting our current SSPC team.
