Principals Report

Hello to everyone!

We have had such a great couple of weeks, with lots of visitors to our school. But, we have also had quite a bit of sickness. We were so fortunate to have had Mrs Rutledge with us for Week 6 to help at school while I was away sick. Miss Kerri was sick last week which is why we have moved the week of our Newsletter to Week 8.

Thank you

I would like to officially thank the Mary’s, for all of the work they did with our students in week 5 and 6. They were a welcome addition to our school and the staff were so thankful for them. They are women of many talents, wisdom and experience and it felt like they have been a part of our family for more than 2 weeks. We are looking forward to having them come back next term while I am away at Principal’s Conference in week 5.

TCSO Visitors

We have been very fortunate to have had quite a few visitors from the TCSO. They have all had such a meaningful and impactful experience during their visits. Luke Barrett Acting SEL unfortunately, due to me being sick, had to meet with me on the computer. He really enjoyed his visit to our school. Rachel Coggan Education Officer was able to work with both teachers, and assist them with planning for Term 3. James Russell, Education Officer: First Nations Education, visited our school and had a great conversation with our G3-6 class. We also welcomed  Sally Yin EO: Acting Learning Support Advisor, Alex Borlai Speech Therapist, Rachel Crooke Occupational Therapist and Carrie Morton School Inclusion Coach. We are very fortunate  to be so well supported from the office.

Under 8’s Day

Next Thursday, 15th June will be Under 8’s Day. We will walk to  the Visitor Information Centre in the morning and then walk back to school at 11am.Students are asked to dress up as what they want to be when they grow up. More information will come home early next week.

Sporting News

Abbie, Digby, Ava and James all travelled to Wandoan on the 29th May to compete in the Regional Trials for Cross Country. James and Ava were successful in being selected to represent South West Qld at the Cross Country State Carnival in Hervey Bay. Abbie was very close, only missing out by a place and was placed as a shadow team member.

The four of these students then travelled on to Chinchilla the next day to compete at the Soccer Regional Trials. Congratulations to Digby for making the State team for a second year. He is off to Cairns in August.

Digby is set to travel to Gladestone for the first week of holidays to compete at the Rugby League State Carnival. We wish him all the best and look forward to hearing from him next term.

Mini Finnies Come & Try Day

We welcomed a beautiful group of Mini Finnies to our Come & Try Day today. I will be running the Mini Finnies program along with Miss Jen in Term 3 & 4. We will run the pre prep program every Friday Morning from 9am-11am. If you know of any families with children starting school next year, please let them know they are more than welcome to come along.

APRE News

New Bishop- Pope Francis has  appointed Bishop Ken Howell, who has served as Auxiliary Bishop of Brisbane since 2017, the seventh Bishop of Toowoomba.
Bishop Howell will succeed Bishop Robert McGuckin, who has led the Diocese of Toowoomba since 2012, whose resignation Pope Francis has accepted.
“I am deeply humbled to be called by Pope Francis to shepherd this local Church and I thank him sincerely,” Bishop Howell said.
“Having worked as secretary to Archbishop John Bathersby, and as Auxiliary Bishop and Vicar General in Brisbane, he will arrive well equipped for this new ministry to which he has been called,” he said.

“The people of the Archdiocese of Brisbane will be sad at losing Bishop Ken, but rest assured Bishop Ken will be warmly welcomed to Toowoomba,” Bishop McGuckin said.
Bishop Howell’s installation as Bishop of Toowoomba is scheduled for July 11 at St Patrick’s Cathedral.

Most Reverend Robert M McGuckin                                                                                                                       Bishop of Toowoomba

P-2 Classroom News

Prep to 2 have had a busy few weeks! After our fun and informative grandparent interviews, we worked on the Pentecost Liturgy. The Grade 1 and 2 children had to practice a reading to present in the Liturgy and the prep children placed a paper flame on the prayer table. Thank you to those families who helped their child practice their reading at home because it really showed in the children’s presentation. The students are enjoying learning their sight words and we have some exciting morning sessions when children get to proceed to the next level! Miss Janell has gone on her long holiday so we have the pleasure of Miss Gabby and Mrs Hodgson helping in our classroom at different times during the week.

Kinds regards,

Jenny Harris

Another 3-6 Class Fairy tale! by Henry Truss

A TURKEY SANDWICH

Written by Henry Truss

Once upon a time there was a boy with a pet turkey, who he loved bringing to school. Though one day he got very embarrassed because the turkey went, “Gobble Gobble!!!” just as he was about to answer the teacher’s question. Everybody laughed at him.

One night the little boy even slept with the turkey. When the sun rose, it was another school day, so the little boy dressed up his turkey as a sandwich, placed it in his lunch box and took it to school. My goodness his mother was surprised when she washed his lunch box that afternoon. He got into big trouble.

Another time, the pet turkey landed on the teacher’s head. Thankfully, by then it was the weekend because the teacher had had enough. So, on the weekend he played with his pet turkey and tried to teach it some manners….well, as much as he could.

The little boy tried very hard to train his turkey, but it was impossible. So, that’s why he decided to eat his turkey.

Now he brings his turkey to school between two slices of bread…..poor turkey.

THE END

St Finbarr's Student Protection Contacts

It is a legislative requirement that all non-state schools have at least two nominated staff members to whom a student can report the behaviour of another staff member that the student considers inappropriate.  We call these specially trained staff members School Student Protection Contacts, or SSPCs.  Each SSPC has been nominated by the principal in recognition of their integrity, approachability and knowledge in the area of student protection.  Whilst students are encouraged to speak up to any trusted adult in the school community, it is important that they know they can access these specific staff members at any time should they have worries, queries or concerns. You will have noticed posters throughout the school depicting our current SSPCs.  The SSPCs are also published on our school website along with information about our student protection processes.  In everything we do at St Finbarr's student safety is our highest priority, therefore the SSPCs at our school are key personnel in our overall safeguarding processes.  Please see the poster depicting our current SSPC team.
